At club level, Lara Dickenmann is no stranger to success. As a member of the highly successful Olympique Lyon-nais, the versatile 29 year old boasts 4 Division 1 Femi-nine titles, Coupe de France Feminine title and two UEFA Women’s Champions League titles.
Now, after over a decade and close to 100 caps, Dickenmann finally has the opportunity to attempt to replicate that success at international level with the Switzerland National Team.
The World Cup is the pinnacle of the women’s game, how did it feel to finally qualify after over a decade with the Swiss National Team?
We came close to qualifying before the last World Cup, but with only 16 participating teams and a long qualifying process, it was too hard for us to qualify for the WC 2011.
Therefore, it felt even better when we finally made it.
How did the public respond to the team’s qualification? Has it raised your profile within the country?
It is hard for me to judge how the Swiss public reacted because I have been abroad for such a long time. I see that the Swiss media are much more interested in women’s soccer today than before the qualification. They will broadcast our games on TV, that’s a first for us, and we (the players) are much more in demand these days.
I believe the qualification is a first great step to develop the game in our country, but we have to keep working hard and getting the results in order to keep up their enthusiasm.
